The Vision
The Avondale Community Art Project was created to transform a shared community space into a vibrant, welcoming landmark through co-creation with local residents. Led by artist Rose Hill and commissioned by the City of London, the aim was simple: to design and paint a community mural that really reflected the voices, ideas, and energy of the people who live in Avondale.
Through creative workshops exploring colour, pattern, and storytelling, the community became the designers of their own public artwork.

The Journey
Across five interactive workshops, more than 130 residents of all ages came together at Avondale Community Centre to shape the design. Children, families, and older residents shared ideas, built mood boards, sketched concepts, and explored how individual contributions could become one collective artwork.
Participants then painted sections of the mural themselves, leaving a personal imprint on a shared creative legacy. The final piece became a co-created public artwork, reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of the local community.

For everyone involved, the mural is a reminder that creativity belongs to everyone, and that community voices can shape the spaces they share.
