India boasts a vast array of artistic traditions, ranging from classical to folk art forms. From the intricate patterns of Mughal miniatures to the vibrant hues of Rajasthani paintings, Indian art captivates with its vivid colours and profound symbolism. We look into the realm of Indian art, exploring the role of traditional practices like Madhubani paintings, Pattachitra, and Warli art in preserving cultural narratives and fostering community bonding.

This Mehndi (Henna) and Mandala design were included in the Islington Community Mural, 2023.

Mehndi designs are intricate and often feature symbolic patterns that reflect cultural traditions and personal meanings. Common motifs include flowers, paisleys, geometric shapes, and intricate latticework. Additionally, specific symbols may represent blessings, fertility, protection, or other cultural beliefs. The designs are carefully crafted, and each stroke carries its own significance.

The term "mandala" is derived from the Sanskrit word for "circle" or "centre." Mandala art originated in ancient India but has been adopted and adapted by numerous cultures throughout history. Mandalas symbolize the universe, wholeness, and the interconnectedness of all things. They are often regarded as a representation of the cosmos or a microcosm of one's inner self.

Africa is a continent rich in cultural diversity, and its art forms reflect a deep connection to ancestral traditions. From the expressive wooden sculptures of West Africa to the mesmerizing geometric patterns of Ndebele beadwork.

This wooden block art which was painted at the Teviot Estate in 2022 is inspired by the African (congo-kinshasa) method.

Wooden block carving holds great cultural significance in Congo-Kinshasa (formerly known as the Democratic Republic of Congo) and is deeply intertwined with the traditions, beliefs, and rituals of local communities. It serves as a means of storytelling, communication, and preserving cultural heritage.

Wooden block carvings often feature symbolic motifs that represent various aspects of African culture and spirituality. Common symbols include animals (such as elephants, lions, or birds) representing strength, wisdom, or cultural totems; geometric patterns symbolizing unity or ancestral connections; and human figures depicting traditional roles, rituals, or historical events.

Wooden block art carving has gained recognition beyond the local communities and has become an important source of income for skilled artists. Artisans and craftsmen continue to refine their techniques and create intricate and innovative designs, blending traditional methods with contemporary elements.

Islamic art is an exquisite fusion of faith, aesthetics, and mathematical precision. We explore the mesmerizing world of Islamic art, characterized by intricate geometric patterns, mesmerizing tilework, and eloquent calligraphy. We discover how Islamic art transcends cultural boundaries, engaging communities through the beauty of mosque architecture, Quranic manuscripts, and the rich symbolism imbued in every brushstroke.

This is an Islamic-inspired pattern which was included in the Teviot Estate Community Mural,2022.

Islamic and Arabian patterns are widely seen in Islamic architecture. Intricate geometric and arabesque designs adorn mosques, palaces, and other structures. Notable examples include the intricate tilework of the Alhambra in Spain, the stunning muqarnas (stalactite-like ornamentation) of the Great Mosque of Cordoba, and the majestic domes and minarets found in mosques around the world.

Geometry and symmetry are fundamental elements of Islamic and Arabian patterns. Intricate geometric shapes, such as circles, squares, stars, and polygons, are meticulously arranged to create complex and harmonious designs. The symmetrical compositions symbolize the order, unity, and balance found in the natural world and reflect the Islamic belief in the perfection of God's creation
