Kindness and Connection: Lessons from our Newham Project

Art has an incredible power to foster connection, spark kindness, and build lasting bonds. At Co-Creative Connection, we see this impact every day, as people come together to create and share through collaborative art. Reflecting on World Kindness Day on November 13th, we want to celebrate how art nurtures unity and connection, and how our 2023 project in Newham stands as a testament to art’s potential to strengthen communities.

The Newham Project: Building Connection Through Art

In Newham, where social isolation impacts physical and mental health, we partnered with local residents to create a mural that would brighten shared spaces and bring people together. Over 100 residents, aged 4 to 84, participated, reflecting the spirit of Newham’s diversity in this shared creative effort.

The workshops focused on mindful activities, guiding residents through designing a mural that emphasises nature, self-love, and sustainable living. Residents explored colour use and learned how to create mood boards, which then inspired the mural’s final design. The experience connected neighbours who previously only passed each other on the street.

This project was life-changing for many. As Martyna, one of the participants, expressed: “My favourite thing about the workshops is the feeling of belonging and being involved in the community. It has really been helping me with my stress levels and being able to relax. To do some art and talk to people - what else could you wish for?”

For others, like Maudlyn, the project brought structure and comfort during challenging times. She shared, “I’ve had a problem with anxiety and leaving the house, so it was something to structure my week and to socialise with a nice group.”

A Tapestry of Voices and Experiences

As people gathered to bring the mural to life, friendships grew, and neighbours who had been strangers became collaborators in a shared journey. Through support from Deafroots (a charity supporting the Deaf community) and SKILLS (adults with learning difficulties)

community outreach, all voices were included, ensuring everyone, including those from the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, could contribute and feel part of the project!

The mural not only became a vibrant piece of art but also a symbol of the community’s shared values and aspirations. “This beautiful art project encouraged human connections and helped all participants to overcome cultural and social barriers while being creative,” one participant said.

The Broader Impact of Art on Connection

The Newham project reflects a broader truth about art’s role in fostering human connection. Art provides a platform for expression and collaboration that brings people together across ages and backgrounds. By inviting everyone to contribute their creativity, community art inspires empathy, breaks down social barriers, and creates a sense of shared pride and accomplishment.

These projects offer a vital opportunity for kindness and connection, uniting people through shared goals and experiences. Art reminds us to look beyond ourselves, encouraging the small, meaningful acts that make communities stronger and more resilient.

Looking Forward: Continuing to Build Through Art

As we reflect on the impact of Newham and similar projects, we’re reminded of art’s powerful role in creating unity. Each collaborative project is a lasting legacy for its community, inspiring connection, fostering friendships, and empowering residents to feel more engaged with their surroundings.

We’re grateful to witness these bonds grow through our work and remain dedicated to creating spaces where creativity, kindness, and community can continue to flourish!
