Art has the power to transform spaces, inspire pride, and connect communities. Our Tower Hamlets mural is the perfect example of how creativity can uplift and empower people. It’s a story that not only rejuvenated a neighbourhood but also marked the very beginning of Co-Creative Connection (CCC).
For our founder, Rose, this project wasn’t just about painting walls - it was the start of a whole new journey. After years of working as a professional artist, collaborating with renowned brands and institutions, the impact of this project changed everything for her. Seeing the community come alive, and witnessing the joy and confidence it sparked in participants, Rose knew she wanted to dedicate her career to working alongside communities through collaborative art. This was the spark that led to the creation of CCC.
A Community Story
Tower Hamlets is known for its vibrant community spirit, but the pandemic strained opportunities for people to come together and celebrate their shared identity. Recognising this, we partnered with the Peabody Sundial Community Centre to co-create a mural that reflected the area’s character and rejuvenated a prominent space.
The project was more than painting a mural it was about empowering people from all walks of life to shape their community’s narrative. Participants included residents with dementia, young people with Down Syndrome, mental health patients, and members of innovative initiatives like East London Cares and LinkAge Plus. This collaboration was made possible thanks to backing from the Mayor of London team and a successful crowdfunding campaign.
The Process: Co-Creation at Its Best
Creating a mural during COVID-19 restrictions was no easy task, but it brought out the best in everyone. Through socially distanced workshops, participants explored colour theory, pattern-making, and mural design. Each person was empowered to create their own square/s, which would become part of the larger mural.
One moment stood out to Rose and remains a driving force behind CCC’s mission. A young girl who had never picked up a paintbrush before approached Rose during the painting sessions and said, “I didn’t know I could do that.” She was amazed not only by her ability to paint but also by the confidence she felt climbing the scaffolding tower to help bring the mural to life.
It was in moments like these that Rose realised the true power of collaborative art: it’s not just about the final product; it’s about what people discover about themselves along the way.
Justina, a second participant shared, “I’ve never done anything like this before. Seeing my own design as part of something this big, it’s incredible to think I helped make it happen!”
The Outcome: A Wall of Pride
In September and October, we partnered with residents, Peabody, and local community groups to bring the designs to life on the walls of the Sundial Community Centre. Despite the logistical challenges, the mural was completed with the enthusiastic participation of everyone involved.
The unveiling event in October 2021 was a celebration of collective achievement. The artwork was a reflection of the people who created it. As Justine Simons OBE, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Creative Industries, put it:
“This beautiful new mural is a fantastic example of community-led art. Local people from all backgrounds have come together to create this piece, and it’s yet another example of how culture unites us and makes our public spaces so special.”
Why Murals Foster Pride
Murals like this one are more than decorative. They empower individuals by giving them a tangible role in shaping their environment. Participants gain a sense of ownership and accomplishment, seeing their contributions in a piece that stands tall for all to see.
In Tower Hamlets, the mural has become a source of pride - not only for those who created it but for the wider community. It reminds residents of their resilience, diversity, and ability to come together to create something meaningful.
Why This Project Matters
The Tower Hamlets mural proved that art can be a catalyst for change. It brought together people from different walks of life, created lasting connections and gave individuals a sense of pride and ownership over their community.
For Rose, this project was life-changing. It inspired her to leave behind Rose Hill Designs and build Co-Creative Connection - a platform dedicated to creating meaningful community art projects. Today, every CCC project carries forward the same ethos that made Tower Hamlets so special: empowering individuals, fostering connection, and leaving a legacy of pride.
As Rose reflects on the journey, she often thinks back to that young girl’s words. Projects like these show us that art is about unlocking potential, inspiring confidence, and reminding people of their strength and creativity.
Looking Forward
This project reaffirmed what we at Co-Creative Connection have always believed: community-driven art has the power to transform spaces and foster belonging. By inviting people to take an active role in creating public art, we’re building confidence, connections, and pride.
